I have a Pi and yes I can make it work, but no it's not even remotely worth it. It's slow, it's far more prone to failure than Roku with Plex app and it can't transcode, which means all your files have to be only to a quality that the Roku's chips can handle.
The trouble with Roku I understand is it will not run XBMC where I can use such wonderful add-ons like Icefilms and 1Channel and MashUp and Simply Movies and many hundreds more great addons like Football Replays, Film-on, and even the UK iPlayers from BBC and ITV (though they both need a UK proxy of course) etc. I can watch when I want almost any movies in HD that I wish or TV shows new or old
